Thanks for the supporting message, Preston! People, when I told about the 6 copies sold and asked “Who is working for free now?”, I was being a little provocative, and making a joke, of course. Anyway, I am happy that some people are reading my translation, and most probably more copies will be sold in the next months, and I will be happy every time that counter goes up. As Preston said, I am building a portfolio – no one can deny it. Besides, I am learning a lot.... See more Thanks for the supporting message, Preston! As Preston said, I am building a portfolio – no one can deny it. Besides, I am learning a lot. Someday I will probably write my own book too – and I doubt that I will be paid upfront. I am not dumping prices. Everyone involved in babelcube knows the rules. No one is being fooled. If people (like me) agree to participate, that’s their problem. This month was okay for me, regular salary from the agencies, and 1 book published. I am happy! See you!

26 copies sold in 2 weeks. Uhu!!! | | | Jeff Whittaker United States Local time: 08:49 Member (2002) Spanish to English + ...
26 x 2.99 = 77.00 for 40,000 words = 0.001925 per word = 16,000,000 million words a year (or 40,000 words a day, every day including weekends and holidays) just to maintain a poverty-level existence. (Of course, you probably don't even get to keep the entire 2.99) Juliano Martins wrote: 26 copies sold in 2 weeks. Uhu!!!

We have to wait, because more books can be sold in the next months. Then what will you say? We can't consider just the 2 first weeks for the calculation. What if 2K books are sold in the end??? And by "end" I mean the end/extinction of human race, of course.

We produce serious work, charge serious money for it and don't go around bragging about being the translator equivalent of Usain Bolt. (*"Awan" is Charlie's brother in a certain espisode of Two and a Half......Sorry, couldn't resist it).

I produce serious work. I charge serious money. How could anyone fake being a professional translator and fool several international translation agencies for 7 years? Am I Frank Abagnale Jr. from translations? I don’t even visit this website anymore, because my clients don’t leave me alone, with so much work they offer me every single day, most of which I have to decline. I just came here to ask you about something and everything you do is say I am a fraud. I don’t care what you say. I will continue my plan. Think with me. If there is something called “average”, certainly there is a group above average and a group below average. Perhaps I am above average and you are jealous. I work for Translateplus, TheBigWord, Syntax, Transperfect, MSS, Lingo24, Paragon, docnroll, GTL Media, Aabam, Absolute Translations, PTSGI, etc… You can ask them about my work if you want.

Yep Juliano, I'm "thinking with you" and suspect you may be right. I'm jealous. Folks, I did not know translators' viagra existed. One never stops learning.... I did not know either it was a good practice for a translator to post [some of] the names of their customers in a public forum... Now I do know, however, what Nietzsche's "Übermensch" stands for. He actually referred to an "Übersetzer" or perhaps "Überübersetzer"? "Superübersetzer"? Übersüpersetzer? Folks, please help with my German.... | | | Now seriously | Jun 2, 2015 |

I don't know how you guys can be so slow. 130k words a month is about 5k words a day (provided you take a couple of Sundays off, at least). That said, an "average translator" can deliver 5k words a day provided they work 12 hours or more, with short interruptions, if any. The problem starts when you have to sustain it over long periods of time. The reality is that you cannot. Mezzos can sing soprano's notes (range). The problem is that they cannot sustain it overtime (tessitura).

(1) I work around 8 hours a day, during the week. Just eventually I work on weekends. (2) I get paid around 0.08 USD per word. (You have a list of my clients, maybe some of them are your clients too, you can check how much they pay) (3) I translate 5-6 K words a day without a problem. When I said 130K words, I meant only a few months. Of course, in those months I earn over $5K. | | | Jeff Whittaker United States Local time: 08:49 Member (2002) Spanish to English + ...
I recognize four of those agencies and I would never, ever work for them due to their very destructive practices to the industry. Because of the way they operate, their opinion matters very little. In fact, I would be embarrassed to publicly mention any affiliation with them. They are notorious for taking advantage of unsuspecting translators. If you seriously love translating, why not translate something for charity that may do some good for humanity rather than translating romance...
