PS I think TM Town is a good idea. Much better than just selling a higher ranking like they do on ProZ.

... that happens on TM-Town too. If you're a "professional" paying member, you get various benefits, including better ranking in searches, and I quote:

"Q. What is the Directory Boost feature Professional members get?

A. Translators who have purchased the 'Professional Plan' will appear first in the search results and will have a special badge displayed on their profile" ( https://www.tm-town.com/membership-pricing ).

Rings any bell?

PLUS:
Sell Glossaries in our marketplace

Free members pay TM-Town 20% commission, paying members pay 10%
Does this mean people can surf the www, upload glossaries from anywhere and everywhere and then try get paid for their efforts??? What does that have to do with translation??

Q. What is an 'enhanced' profile?

A. We created beautiful portfolio style profiles for anyone to use for free, however, we enhance our paid users' profiles by removing the Similar Translators section.

What is going on here? Does this ring any additional bells?

As said here http://www.proz.com/forum/business_issues/303212-two_objections_regarding_tm_town_related_advertising.html

As a paying Proz member who is not and will not become a TM-Town member I want all links to it removed from this site (also from the Jobs tab!), as it is actually in unfair competition to Proz members.

At the same time I wonder if a marketing expert has been asked what he thinks about an idea like creating competition between similar platforms (for paying members) you own!

Am I paying for having competitor advertising displayed on this site?

Go here http://www.proz.com/translator-directory/

and look what's displayed left hand.

Or hover over the "Jobs" tab and see the TM-T link at the bottom (second last, "New search option").

Although hardly anyone is actually using this feature, there are cases where it can be very useful.

For example, have a look at Henk Sanderson's repackaging of the IATE database, which can be downloaded for free from the IATE website these days by clicking the "Download IATE" button on the IATE search page, which leads here: http://iate.europa.eu/tbxPageDownload.do .

Henk is offering ready-made packages for all of the well-known CAT tools, or generic CSV formats for importing into your favourite terminology tool. He has put an awful lot of work into cleaning the data and getting it into a usable format. Read all about it over at his personal site: http://santrans.net/ or on his TM-Town profile, where he has sold most of his packages so far. I bought his Dutch-English package, e.g., to import into memoQ and my online terminology evoTerm (http://www.evoterm.net/ ) termbase.

In return, on Proz.com a non logged in visitor sees this at the bottom of your (paying member) profile:

More translators and interpreters: English to German - English to Italian - Italian to German More language pairs

where the displayed language pairs are yours - in this case 3 of mine - and "More language pairs" points here: http://www.proz.com/freelance-translators/

As for the TM-T link in the Jobs tab AND the TM-T advertising on the translator search page, see the pic below.

Both point to: https://www.tm-town.com/nakodo

I gave a try at it in french to Italian and voila... 2 names of colleagues translating legal matters, but of course NOT my name, well they are expert I am a mere member who has been paying for 13 years now.

Really disappointed.

Agree with Jo Jul 15, 2016

But perhaps we underestimate our clients. Those who seek cheep service will try TM-town and get what they pay for. Those disappointed ones will learn a lesson. For clients most important is prompt delivery and the quality they charge their clients for. An agency that delivers poor translations to the end client will loose out.

In the underworld, this is called "protection fee". It is the money you have to pay gangsters periodically so they do not harm you, your family o your business.

Some gangsters consider this criminal practice so ethically low, they refuse to do it.

Being asked to pay for a service is hardly a protection fee. I understand that people are feeling threatened (especially those of you who are not fans of or do not understand CAT tools), but let's try to remain somewhat rational.

The free version of TM-Town offers a basic profile (with some features relating to helping you find work), and the paid version offers more features relating to helping you find work. What's so outlandish about this? Isn't this pretty much how every single other online company operates these days?

LOL - actually on Proz.com it seems we are paying for having the link to similar translators NOT REMOVED from the bottom of our profiles.

In addition we are paying for having links pointing to an external translator portal which literally draws prospecting customers away from this site and consequently from our profiles.

The real problem is not TM-T - the issue are those links on the Proz.com site!
