BIGGER THAN BIGGER 基本上是更大、更强的意思,而岂止于大没有把更大的含意包含在内。你完全可以把它理解为原来就大,现在只是更强了。所以后边的一个BIGGER全然被翻译漏掉了。

I believe what David and Loise are saying is basically in line with what J.H. expressed before. Mulling it over again, I would agree with them and most of the other people here who recognized the phrase as being styled in classical Chinese(文言文).

As such, I would suggest that the most likely interpretation in standard Mandarin(白话文)would be "岂是停止于大?", which by and large would make the meaning correct.

Yet IMO, the phrase still seems to have the problem of being open to various interpretations as many folks here have already demonstrated, mostly depending on how the character "岂" is interpreted.

Jyuan is right that the meaning of the comparative of big, bigger, is missing, for which points would bound to be taken off if this were an exam.

I also still question the wisdom of using the device of a rhetorical question in the Chinese rendering while the English original is totally assertive. Additionally, why mix classical Chinese in the titular slogan with standard Mandarin in the narrative? IMO it just adds to the confusion since the combo "岂止" is a frequently-used everyday term in standard Mandarin.

Just to be clear, I'm not being negative. At this point, I'm neutral on the translated slogan - not that hot, not that cold ... lukewarm.

1. 现代文是从古文演化而来的,现代人使用的或能理解的,都已不属于古文;
2。给现代人看的东西为什么要用古文?这样做的依据是什么?

我知道上两句话有逻辑上的FALLACY,有矛盾的地方,但是这不妨碍对它们的理解。

莎士比亚的举目,用古文翻译并演出,还有人看吗?

看到岂-止于-大和bigger than bigger 时,我心中冒出了一句小学生的白话文:大了还要再大,大了还要更大。:D

对我而言,岂-止于-大虽然是古文形式,却还挺容易上口的,从网上很多网友的各种“效颦”反应看来,我觉得这个广告文并不算失败。最近还看到一个“iphone 6岂止于大?大哥大更大”的说法,挺逗的。

現代文並非演化自古文,而係由古代白話演化而來。古文,切確的名稱應該是「文言」,是五四運動前正統的漢語書面語,有其特有的文法詞彙;白話則近口語,《三言二拍》、《儒林外史》、《兒女英雄傳》、《紅樓夢》等即以白話寫就,中含少許文言。

古文,如我前面所言,切確的名稱應該是文言,與之相對的不是今文,抑或現代文,而係白話。文言並非是專給古人看的,也不是古人才用文言。其實,上世紀八十年代,不少學者文人書信往來仍用文言。

至於為何現在翻譯不宜大用文言,原因是當今語文教育不力,即便受過高等教育的人也沒多少懂純文言的文章,以文言譯文章給普通人看已失去意義。

古文(文言)是書面語,即便古人,平常說話用的還是白話。以古文譯莎翁戲劇當然沒問題,也一定會有人看,但若演出,對白一定會用古代白話。


我知道回覆這個帖子可能會引起軒然大波,但見到不少同仁誤解文言,我不得不婉言解釋一下。我並不提倡不分場合,處處用文言翻譯。通俗文章,當然應用白話譯,但若是給文史哲學者看的文章,或是人文氣息濃厚的文章,酌情用點淺顯的文言也未嘗不可。


以上是我一點愚見,若有不當或冒犯之處,務請大家多多包涵。

这个命题比较大,很难说分明。你可以说古代的白话和现代的是类似的,也就是说当代的中文书面语言就是古代和或当代的口语的书面形式,这在一定程度上1也许是正确的,但是你不能把现代书面中文和古文/古代汉语完全割裂开来。

我原来的意思是,从古文/文言文/古代汉语吸收入当代书面语的词汇,都已经变成现代汉语。大量的成语都是来自古典文献的,当然都是古文/文言文/古代汉语,但是你能把它们叫作文言文吗?

这个离开了讨论的焦点,我不会展开说。我的一个POINT是,感觉某个词是文言,就认为它是好的,这个观点缺乏基础。

有几个人知道这个口号该怎么断句?...但基本要求是清晰、准确。

这个就很微妙,古文跟现代语的语言历史关系,逻辑关系和感性关系都是大可研究的领域。做广告的应该是比较讲究感性关系:古文可以代表真理,典范。

1)文言不够通俗易懂
2)“更大” 的意思没翻出来
3)译文使用原文没有的 反问句型,整个语气变了
4)标题口号为文言,其它叙述为白话, 造成了前后 文风语调不一致

也 emphasizes whatever is said before it, so it's always at the end of a phrase or sentence.

That's just my feel for its use, not necessarily correct.
