翻译一些上万字的游戏的时候，经常会遇到一些pun。直接翻译读者会莫名其妙；加译注，又觉得是不得以才为之。虽然有的pun是可以想出一个妥当的译文。但有的却无能为力。
It's odd that a job like that is called odd.
请教。

这句话的两个odd都是奇怪的意思，所以不存在双关语。把这种工作当不正常才算不正常。

我的做法是先略过不要处理，等到晚上关电脑轻松一下，再拿出一张纸把很多同音或类似意思的词列在上面，慢慢联想。我特别享受，而且你有可能躺下去睡觉的时候突然想到。
至于你那句，我觉得Phil的建议不错吧。
之前我跟另一个译者一起把韩寒的博客文章翻译成荷兰语，他有很多双关语跟文字游戏。
我记得当时翻“我在上海活得很好”有一段：
有个外国人在上海上班，人家问他，你什么国家来的，那哥们忧伤的说，我的国家曾经叫南斯拉夫。相比起那哥们，至少这里还叫上海，并没有因为很多人下海了而改成了下海，这是我们的幸运。
韩寒有很多这种，还挺伤脑筋的

所以说，后面的odd是指odd job吗？这整段有点怪，因为没有 moonlight job 这一说，moonlighting 是动词才对。反正既然是这个意思，我觉得可以考虑用小工或零工来重现英文的文字游戏。
说它是小工其实是小看它了。人家称之为零工，但它的价值远大于零。

感谢Phil提供这么巧妙的译文。我原本想了一个，但觉得偏离原文有点远“外快赚得又不快，为何叫外快。”
写游戏的本来就爱玩文字游戏，用moonlight也许是故意的吧（纯属猜测）。
KuaLanx的建议也很好，反正天天要翻这个文件，天天早上都看一看没搞定的Pun，说一定啥时候来了灵感。

头一个 odd 用 "竟" 或 “居然” 来表示就基本把原句意思翻出来了，可谓是简明扼要。
翻译的主要目的是传递信息，翻英文的 puns 也并不例外。用词再巧妙，中文没有把原文原义清楚地表达出来亦是徒劳。

→ “a moonlighting job”: 2nd job ( but 2 is not an odd number)
→ 第二职业竟被称为零工。

有几个人能明白什么是奇零活儿？
对于第二个ODD，没必要把“奇”字的意思翻译出来，而且奇怪和奇(JI)够不成双关语的对子吧？

抱歉，jyuan兄，这几天比较忙，未能及时回复。
我觉得，汉语的“奇”（分别取 Qi 和 Ji 的读音）字是可以与英文的 Odd （分别取“奇怪”和“零碎/偶然/不定期”的意思）一词对应的。只是由于语言的演变，在现代汉语中很少使用奇（Ji）这个字及其组成的词罢了。

You raised a good question to which I’ll try to provide an answer as follows.
Yes, I admit that it can be said that in the original sentence there is no such word as exactly corresponds to the Chinese character 竟 in my translation; however, this does not follow that the use of the character 竟 is groundless.
竟 or 居然 in Chinese means unexpectedly, to one’s surprise, etc., and this meaning is,as a matter of fact, implied in the original English sentence, specifically, just as Steve pointed out, in the first "odd" which should be interpreted as (it is) unusual…, (it is) unexpected…. Actually, the addition of竟 in my translaton is used to strengthen the tone of surprise, just as you used “pure and simple” in your post. Without 竟, the tone of the translation will become much weaker and it seems to me that it can’t express the original meaning perfectly.
Hope this clarifies.
