What type of 'bottom feeder' is going to be crawling around looking for translators working that cheap for German-English-German?
Add that to the fact that those 'on the prowl for a sucker' will have immediately noted your geographical location (Thailand, as from next year) - i.e. not exactly in their neck of the woods and so unable to act very effectively in the case of their default - and I then wish you all the luck in the world getting even that measly fee out of them.
If you don't appear to take yourself seriously, who the heck else is going to?
Whilst it may take a while to get going and build up your confidence/speed again, there's no need to sell yourself short in the process.
If your skills are rusty, rather charge a decent rate and pay an experienced colleague out of that to review your work for the first few months. That's the quickest - and in my view, the most professional - way of getting back into the business.

Is it imperative to have a translation software package eg. like Wordfast or Trados? I see on the job postings that all agencies need you to have the software. The software speeds up the work does it not?
Basically, I would really appreciate any comments or advice on where on earth to start?!Sorry if my questions are of the basic kind! There is a book advertised on ProZ.com on how to get started and info on what rates to charge etc. Does anyone know if this book is worth getting? (I can find out the name and get back to you).

Let'see, I have found you and let me give you a promise: we do not have so musch assignments in this pair, but last year we had a long project with aviation company.
