I am trying to re enter the translation field after being out of it for about 12 years (birth of child!). Before this, I had many years experience....Things have certainly changed and I have no idea how translation software even works - can someone explain? Does it automatically translate a document which you then have to edit? Is it worth it? Also, how best to get jobs ? If I plan to work part time, is it worth becoming a full member? And how best to set my rates? Thanks so much for the advice!

I don't mean to be unfriendly, but how about looking at a few of the five kazillion posts previously made addressing exactly these issues...

You might also like to try the Getting Started articles at:

http://www.proz.com/translation-articles/categories/Business-of-Translation-and-Interpreting/Gettin g-Established/

or the CAT-tool articles at:

http://www.proz.com/translation-articles/categories/Technology/CAT-Tools/

Samuel Murray has written a good intro to using Wordfast which you can find here:

http://leuce.com/translate/wordfast.html

and Maria Otero has written an intro to Trados which you can find here:

http://www.proz.com/translation-articles/articles/1510/1/Trados-beginner%27s-guide

That will give you a good idea of the basic principles of using CAT-tools.

I'll leave the rest of the research to you...

My advice for you would be to start searching the forums here, all the matters you mention have already been widely discussed.

CAT comparison Jul 8

To unravel the pros and cons of various tools (subject to very lengthy discussion in the forums) you may care to look at - and maybe invest in - this comparison tutorial (recently advertised on Proz) http://www.translatorstraining.com/mod/resource/view.php?id=8.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks Jul 8

Thank you all for your advice. Have any of you used the translation tools or do you routinely make use of them and would you recommend them as time saving devices?

Harrison reply Jul 8

Dear Asker, I guess Harrison's reply above on CAT-Tools would include the practical feedback you seek. Good luck.
