Did you know that for DG Translation, as an individual translator, you have the same position as a big translation company? DGT does not differentiate and many of its best external contractors are individuals, either self-employed persons or dynamic teams of two or three professionals.
We use taxpayers’ money and we must be transparent. We must observe fair and equal treatment with every candidate. Reading our specifications may appear daunting at first, but you should read them again! We also reply to your questions during the weeks when the call is open, and we do that in three languages, almost in real time, and all questions and replies are made public on our website.
We are ready to pay for quality: we apply a quality/price ratio of 70/30, in favour of quality. And for every job done for us, you receive a quality note with feedback.

Does your organization ever do a webcast or similar of these events? If not, you should consider it in the future. This is the second one of such that I've found interesting, but being based nowhere near Manchester, it generally isn't feasible for me to attend in person, and perhaps I'm not the only one who would consider paying a fee for remote access to sessions like this.

I'm already familiar with the rules on EU tendering, but thanks Maria for your willingness to offer info. I don't want to hijack the thread and get too far off topic, but while in practice most translation-related calls for tender express citizenship or establishment in a member state as a requirement, I don't think there is a general prohibition against international calls for tender by EU institutions. Also, an individual or company might meet one of these requirements even if they are in part based outside the EU. In any event, these factors don't detract from the potential usefulness of the information provided in the talk.

I went to a similar talk recently and would highly recommend it. Translators really should be making every best effort to attend these events that allow them to establish direct links with clients rather than opting for the less profitable and less satisfactory route of working for the middleman. It also makes a great change to see an event focused on helping translators find more work rather than the usual generic presentations on how to run your business that seem to abound these days.

That is exactly what we're trying to do with our events. Our first workshop concentrated on developing direct client relationships and I hope the DGT event will manage to convince colleagues to apply for contracts directly in small, specialised teams rather than depend on the middleman.
I started organising these workshops to help the community to overcome the current market conditions in the UK and the goal is to bring in speakers that can contribute towards creating a shift in our professional mindset from being mere agency workers to taking our professional practice towards what it is - a highly-skilled, specialised service.

Intermediaries are required to reveal the names of the translators they wish to involve, and have obligations to respect any such engagement (even if there is ample room for improving the control freelance translators have over how data linked to their name is used).

In short: intermediaries may win tenders only when their application is backed up by properly qualified translators. Those translators therefore lend their credentials to these intermediaries to win tenders.
Freelancers may also apply on their own – individually or as a group. This gives them much more control. However, many freelancers don't take this route for fear that the administrative jungle is too thick. Do they realize that the documentation they submit to intermediaries so that the latter can participate in a tender is also a lot of admin work?
The EC DGT is keen on building direct ties with freelancers, and a high-ranking representative will fly to Manchester to explain how it works. For anyone who has worked or wishes to work for European institutions, this information may open new doors. Thank you, Diana, for organizing this event!

One of the reasons a number of agencies are keen on cvs is that they use the promising ones in tender applications and worse still, without your permission. Should they win the tender, they invariably turn to the cheapest translators they can find. If you’re going to go through the trouble of filling in the forms and collecting the paperwork, then you might as well do it for yourself or team up with other translators. I believe there’s a helpline available to help you through the process.

Agency tendering practices are very well-known to us. It's a very unfortunate state of affairs, so I do agree that if we're going to spend a significant amount of time gathering all the paperwork needed for an agency, we might as well do this for our own benefit from the start.
It does take time and effort, no doubt, and that's why I hope that this talk will give many colleagues the final push they need
