Fabrice Kanada Englisch |
I am looking for some common but extreme example of translations being much longer than the English.
This is to illustrate some of the challenges of localization.
e.g.
File -> Fichier
Close -> Schließen
Also looking for some names with extended characters best I came up with so far is "Gwénaële"

Notifíquese = It is ordered that notice be given
English is not always shorter.

A couple of Polish ones, off the top of my head:
soccer: piłka nożna
bat (zool.): nietoperz
chest (anat.): klatka piersiowa
filibuster (n): długie przemówienie mające na celu zablokowanie obrad (haha, extreme enough? Does this one have a single-word translation into ANY language?)

mediamatrix Chile Spanisch > Englisch + ... | | (A bit off topic...) Is this about words ... or concepts? | Jul 9 |
The English word 'tomorrow' (8 letters) is longer than the Spanish 'mañana' (6 letters).
But the Spanish concept 'mañana' is iiiiinfiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiteeeeeeeeeeeeleeeeeeeeeeeeey longer than even the most procrastinating Englishman's concept of 'tomorrow'.

At the end of a formal letter:
English:
Yours faithfully,
XXX
French (en version abrégée!):
Veuillez croire, mon Cher Monsieur Dupont, à l'expression de mes sentiments les plus distingués.
XXX
And in formal Spanish it can be worse still

Spain - Spanyolország - and a lot of similar ones: Franciaország etc. Very difficult to deal with in subtitles, as "in France" would be Franciaországban, and in subtitles it is not advisable to hyphenat it into two lines.
The following are all from informatics; lot of these words would be displayed in small boxes on the screen. The English developers somewhat cannot immagine the hassle they can cause by not giving sufficient space in the box, not to mention expressions using more than one of these short English words:
"check bin" would be: "ellenőrizze a szemetesádát"
"dial-up script" equals to:
"telefonos hálózati parancsállomány"
"default screen" - "alapértelmezés szerinti képernyőkép"
default - alapértelmezett
jam - papírelakadás
jogger - finombeállító
interposer - kiegészítő papírmodul
check - ellenőrizze
bin - szemetesláda
bind - összekapcsol
tiled - mozaikszerűen elrendezett

For an alpha translation software I have a question.I need several opinions regarding the length of translation jobs.
For instance please do tell; What is the percentage of the translation jobs that are less than 200 words? What about the rest? You got the idea.
If we are going to arrive % 100 please give your best shot to create an estimate graph.
I appreciate it.
