Scam email..... from Nick Ungefug Feb 16, 2012

I received these 2 messages below from this person. It just did not add up that a respectable person would not search for a local agency to do a translation. Besides his choice of words just left me thinking. I went and googled the whole thing and I found this forum and others. I wanted to do something to sabotage their activities on the web. Thankfully there are people who do not get caught in their web but unfortunately some do. I just wish people were more careful.
Thanks

Dear Micheal,

Thank you for your message and for your interest in the possibility of working in collaboration.

I am afraid I only consider jobs offered directly to me by project managers of reputable translation agencies whose track record can be accessed through Proz.com’s Blue Board.

Therefore, I am afraid I will not be available for this project.

Kind regards,

Hello
There is no need for you to open another account before you cash
this Travelers Cheques, you can easily cash it instantly either at
your bank or at any bank around you, but the bank will only deduct
exchange fee from the money. Below are the
instruction for cashing the Travelers Cheques, Firstly, you must sign
and write your name on each Cheques from home before going for the
cashing at your bank, but you will have to write the date and
countersign at the bank when the cashier instruct you to do so. AT
HOME BEFORE GETTING TO THE BANK A) You must put your signature on the
first line of all cheques where it says "SIGN HERE IMMEDIATELY UPON
RECEIPT OF THIS TRAVELERS CHEQUE" B) Write your names on the 2nd line
where it says
"PAY TO THE ORDER OF"exactly as it appears on your identity material
to be used because Payee may ask for your ID; a driving licence or
passport should suffice, and doing so would most usefully be towards
the end of comparing the signature on the ID with those on the
Cheques. AT THE FRONT OF THE BANK CASHIER C)Write the date on the last
line where it says "DATE" D) You shall sign again on the last line
where it says "COUNTERSIGN HERE IN PRESENCE OF THE PERSON CASHING"
Please this instructions are very important and will enable you in
exchanging the Cheques instantly. Waiting to hear from
you soonest.

I stopped conversation saying I can't deal without VAT...

Ana Mesa Scamming Jan 10, 2013

Hi everyone,

I have just received today a message from Ana Mesa. Apparently, she was more worried about my address, telephone, zip code, etc...than about my work itself. She sent me 5 pages directly, and insisted in doing everything through check payment.
My first impression was: "What is this all about?".
Then I kindly told her I don´t accept check payments as they can be lost on their way home, and also because of the charges my bank would take from this amount.

My first impression was: "What is this all about?".
Then I kindly told her I don´t accept check payments as they can be lost on their way home, and also because of the charges my bank would take from this amount.
I haven´t replied with my information, or details she asked, but I told her I would work on the project if:
- she pays through paypal or bank transfers.
- She tells me more about the project, as with 5 pages, and reading her awful English writing and grammar...
- A deadline, which she never talked about it.

And now I´m waiting her response, which will be replied by me as "You are a scammer, and I don´t work with you sorry".

I attach the mails she sent me:

To all this, I told her I had to get paid via paypal or bank transfer, to be cautious, and I asked for a 60% of the total amount before starting the project, and another 40% when sending the project to her.
Also I asked her about the project details, the public it was addressed to, etc... Now I am waiting for her response, to tell her I WON´T WORK FOR THEM!

Hope this helps you all...and luckily I found this post, because, at the moment, my professional situation is quite difficult here in Spain, and sometimes I say "yes" without even knowing where the project comes, or even if I will be paid or not! It´s a shame but, "life is life" (as the Status Quo song)

See you next time and please continue posting your experiences about scammers because it´s quite helpful for all of us, who are always undefended.

Dear fellow colleagues,
as I mentioned numerous times before, it is NOT ONE crook ! Cyber criminals, share (they buy it online) a list of ”requests” and numerous names and e-mail addresses.
IT IS NOT A SINGLE GUY !

Same ”request for translation” may come from n different individuals. It is a ”semi-spear phishing” (that means that they target the translators' community, not a certain translator) and they play the numbers. Out of 300,000 spam- messages sent, there are 10-15 gullible people who fall for the scam.

Best protection ? Stay informed and heed Enrique's advice.
