Hello everyone,
I keep receiving the "System out of memory" exception when trying to create one particular project. Here are the specs:

Project specs:

  • SDL Trados Studio Professional, build 9.1.2261.3

  • One TTX file, around 24,000 words, 16 MB in size

  • One TM, about 107,000 TUs, 151 MB in size

  • One AS Dictionary, 8 MB in size

Project specs:

  • SDL Trados Studio Professional, build 9.1.2261.3

  • One TTX file, around 24,000 words, 16 MB in size

  • One TM, about 107,000 TUs, 151 MB in size

  • One AS Dictionary, 8 MB in size

PC specs:

  • HP Laptop, Intel Core i3, 2 x 2.27 GHz, 3 GB RAM

  • Win7 Home Premium, fully updated, Studio always run under admin rights

  • Java version 1.6.0_14, Java NextGen plugin disabled

Although the TM is fairly large, I've worked on much larger files using much larger TMs and termbases.
I've tried both creating a project (Studio hangs at the file conversion stage) and opening the translatable file as a single document. With the latter process, the file opens, but will always throw the "System out of memory" exception once I try to edit a segment.

Is there a solution to this one? Thank you for any suggestions.

I also receive this error message frequently.

I have 12 GB of RAM installed, so my physical memory is clearly not the problem.

Possible solution Mar 3, 2011

Hi Stanislav/Lutz

Possible solution which I am suggesting is:
Either,

1] check guidelines at: http://talisma.sdl.com/display/2n/kb/article.aspx?aid=2529&n=1&s=1 (requires account)

or;

2] Workaround 1:(above Vista versions)

Hi Stanislav/Lutz

Possible solution which I am suggesting is:
Either,

1] check guidelines at: http://talisma.sdl.com/display/2n/kb/article.aspx?aid=2529&n=1&s=1 (requires account)

or;

2] Workaround 1:(above Vista versions)

Close SDL Software before you proceed.

1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Java
2. The Java Control Panel is opened now where you need to click on the tab Java
3. Under Java Applet Runtime Settings click on View...
4. Double click in the box under Java Runtime Parameters
5. Enter a value above half of your systems physical memory.

For example: if RAM is 1024 MB, enter a value "-Xmx768" or above "-Xmx1024" (without quotes)
Click on OK/Apply to confirm the changes
now open SDL software

------------------------------

Workaround 2:

Try to set the virtual memory as System managed (only for Windows XP users):

1. Click Start > Control Panel > System
2. In the System Settings dialog box click on the tab Advanced and then under Performance on the button Settings...
3. In the Performance options dialog box click on the tab Advanced
4. Click under Virtualmemory > Change
5. Choose System managed size and confirm with OK
6. Restart your computer and then try again to create or edit in the termbase you opened

Hope No 2 solution will solve your problem.

Regards,

Sudarshan

Not working Mar 3, 2011

Hello Sushan,
thank you for your suggestions. I am well aware of this Java bug, but I think it was Jerzy who mentioned in some of the other threads that this error has nothing to do with Java settings.

Anyway, I tried that, but to no avail. Does anyone have another idea?

Meanwhile, I managed to get to the stage of working with the file, but I receive the same error message once I try to save the project (fortunately enough, saving the target file works).

Problem resolved! Mar 5, 2011

Hello everyone,
this is to let you know that SDL Support managed to resolve this issue. The problem was related to the actual TTX file and to the way Studio parses some of the TTX tags.

Two "Search and Replace" operations on the original TTX have fixed this for me. This issue should be resolved permanently in the next release of Studio.

Paul et al, a BIG thank you!

Hi Michael,
you're absolutely right. Here's the solution for large TTX files:
1) Open the TTX in Notepad (or Notepad++ or whatever)
2) Press CTRL+H, find Type="start" and replace it with nothing.
3) Press CTRL+H, find RightEdge="angle" and replace it with nothing.
4) Save the TTX and process it with Studio.

This has worked for me like a charm.

Opening the TTX in Notepad works Jun 3, 2011

Thank you Stanislav and Paul. It worked. I knew it had something to do with those nasty Type="start"s and RightEdge="angle"s. Seriously, though, this bug has cost me many hours of work over the past year.

Will be resolved Jun 4, 2011

Hi Michael,
this should be resolved in Studio 2011 for good. Just for info.

I spoke too soon Jun 9, 2011

I'm having this error AGAIN on a new job, even after using all suggested workarounds. The file contains only 3000 words and is 880 KB. Any other workarounds?????

Let's be frank. If your clients often need you to deliver TTX files, you probably shouldn't buy Studio until this bug is fixed.

And for those of us who have missed deadlines and lost valuable time due to this Studio error, I think a free upgrade to the next release would be fair.

No idea Jun 9, 2011

Hi Michael,
sorry, I have no other ideas. The workaround I described above has always helped me though...
