TXT as in TXT TM? Apr 20, 2012

Hi,

Guess you export to TMX from Studio, then import the TMX into a TMW TM using Workbench, then export as TXT.

Regards

Paul

No Workbench in 2011 Apr 20, 2012

Hi,

Workbench is a component of SDL trados 2007. So if you do not have this, but my guess is you do as I seem to recall seeing your name on 2009 queries a few times, then you either need to purchase it seperately or find someone who can do this conversion for you (I can do this if you like?)

Thank you Paul,

I never have Studio 2009 or have any query about it.
I have already submitted the tmx type to client.

Thank you very much.

Add a CSS style sheet to the TMX memory Apr 20, 2012

Since TMX is an XML file, you can associate a CSS style sheet to it.
The style sheet can be set up to display your TMX data as a HTML table.

Like this:
1. Rename the TMX file with an .xml extension.
2. Open the TMX/XML file in a plaintext editor.
3. Beneath the first line (which should read "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>"), add this line:
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/css" href="test.css"?>

note{display:none}
prop{display:none}
body{display:table}

5. Open the TMX/XML file in a Web browser. The text of the translation units should be displayed in a simple tabular format. This text can be copied as plaintext.

(OT) .sdlxliff as plaintext Apr 20, 2012

For .sdlxliff it gets more complicated. Can't get a bilingual table layout working out of hand. But here's CSS to display all the source TU:s in an .sdlxliff file as plaintext:

Thank you Joakim,

I have some questions,

I. I have already convert it to txt in unicode format, is this OK?
I can convert it anyway.

II. The end of the document has the following message,
Cannot view XML input using CSS style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Invalid at the top level of the document. Error processing resource 'file:///D:/Translation/Global LT/Ford/test.css.xml'. ...

Is this OK?
I deleted the message and there is no problem.

III. The format of txt I receive from client before I convert to sdltm and convert back to tmx, and then convert to txt (follow your instruction), is quite different from the final txt that I did.

My final txt looks like word, but txt from my client has format like,

{\fonttbl
{\f1 \fmodern\fprq1 \fcharset0 Courier New;}
{\f2 \fswiss\fprq2 \fcharset0 Arial;}
{\f3 \fcharset222 Tahoma;}
{\f4 \froman\fprq2 {\*\panose 02020603050405020304}\fcharset0 Times New Roman;}
{\f5 \froman\fprq2 {\*\panose 02020500000000000000}{\*\falt ?s?}\fcharset136 PMingLiU;}
{\f6 \fswiss\fprq2 {\*\panose 020b0604030504040204}\fcharset0 Tahoma;}
{\f7 \froman\fprq2 {\*\panose 02020500000000000000}\fcharset136 @PMingLiU;}

Is this OK?
I did anything wrong, didn't I?

Thank you so much.

RTF Apr 21, 2012

The question was "How can I convert sdltm to txt". My solution displays the *text* of translation units in a TMX file. That's all it does or can do...

If you have imported an RTF file into Trados, there may be all kinds of Trados settings that affect how it is imported and stored. Apparently the tags aren't exported into TMX and so aren't visible. So if you need to create a text file containing the translated text with the original RTF codes, my solution won't do that.

From the error message you appear to have saved the style sheet (CSS) as an XML file ("test.css.xml"). Follow the instructions and save it as a plaintext file with the .css extension. (This won't solve your RTF problem, though.)

CSS Apr 21, 2012

That is ingenious.
Some other options are described here: http://www.proz.com/translation-articles/articles/3194/
The tool I wrote for the purpose could come in handy for very large TMX files, which browsers can't display.
Also, I'm not sure what your HTML trick does with inline formatting tags (bpt, ept, it, ph etc.). Tmx2tabbed offers to strip them, which is probably a good idea.

P.s. I'll add your method to the article, if you don't mind.

Hi,

Joakim is referring to a TEXT file really and has extracted the text from the TMX file. You are talking about a TXT Translation Memory Format which is something different... I think. The TXT your client sent you is probably the TXT you would get by exporting from Workbench.

Paul
