Succesful because of a succesful marketing strategie, i.e. by selling the product cheaper to agencies or by luring them that the word count and thus the discounts is becoming more and more to their benefit, in short: consequently (indirectly) forcing freelancers to buy their version of the product simply because of the reason that most agencies stick to their preferred CAT tool and are not willing / able to use the interchanging features. I had so many discussions with agencies why they just don´t send me the sdlxliff files and an export of their TM instead of packets. Either the PMs don´t know how that works or they are simply not flexible enough to do so. Dan didn't say 'greatest' or 'best' or whatever Yes, you are right: He carefully weighted his words

I would like to know whether in 2015 it will be possible to change the display font of the source and target text in Edit mode. As of now, this is not possible and it requires changing the Normal style in the source document and reloading the source. This makes reading more difficult in some documents. I don't expect to love Trados any more than another tool, but I do expect it to be user-friendly. I found workarounds for other issues - this one, which seems pretty elementary, may be a showstopper. I have to be able to read my source document easily, rather than change the source in order to be able to read it in Trados. Hi, Massimo (sorry I called you by your surname just now!) I attended your interesting webinar the other day on productivity improvements in 2015. I want to attend the one on configurability, but it does not seem to be listed in the SDL webinars listing. Is it yet to be scheduled, please? Thanks!

All I wanted to know is if I will still be provided with Autosuggest as part of 2015 Freelance Plus or if this time I would have to purchase it separately. This question couldn't be answered. I was also told that contrary to Studio 2011 and 2014 I cannot run both programs on the same computer after installing 2015. This won't make much of a difference, but it is always a good idea to keep the previous version just in case. As a comment on the PSMA, I would like to point out that although it entitles the user also to free updates, it is also quite expensive. I also run memoQ (required by some of my clients) and the annual cost of the licence which includes support and free updates is of 124 Euros against the £181 for the basic PSMA. Quite a difference for the same level of service and this is the main reason why I haven't purchased it yet. In any case before pre-ordering I still would like to know about Autosuggest. There should be upgrade options for all configurations. I am currently running 2011/2014 and 2015 on the same machine and they are all independent of each other. One difference is that 2011/2014 both use the same licensing mechanism and the upgrade involved you returning the 2011 license and the licensing 2014 only. Because they used the same core licensing mechanism this automaticaly licensed 2011 again so you were able to run them both. Studio 2015 has been given a new licensing system to enable us to offer more flexible licensing options and control for customers with many licences. The mechanism won't change for individual users so you won't notice a difference. But under the hood it is different which means when you return the 2014 license to process the upgrade 2014 will cease to work and you will only be able to use Studio 2015. This is really what an upgrade is. You hand in the old and are provided with the new. Hi Paul, In your last post you said: Technically this is of course possible. I am currently running 2011/2014 and 2015 on the same machine and they are all independent of each other. This is really what an upgrade is. You hand in the old and are provided with the new. If I remember correctly way back in Trados Workbench days, when an upgrade was released it was always possible to carry on using the previous versions, if for some reason it was necessary. You yourself said " Because they used the same core licensing mechanism this automaticaly licensed 2011 again so you were able to run them both." When pre-ordering 2015 I read all available information very carefully and found absolutely no mention that it would not be yet possible to use any previous versions, including 2011 and 2014. I feel this is a huge change and that it was not mentioned at all I feel SDL are taking the chance to rip off freelancers. The change in the licensing mechanism was to benefit the multi licence users, not the freelancers, your words! Indirectly. I have used many kinds of software in my time, I have a technical background not a linguistic one, most of them much more expensive than Studio, and have never experienced such an underhand way of dealing with long standing customers. Freelancers are openly differentiated from the 'big boys' in that a 'Freelancer' version is available as well as other versions for the 'big boys'. Then SDL should ensure that the freelancer is dealt with differently to the 'big boys' when it comes to licensing. Come on, from a programmers point of view it's a doddle and could be implemented in a couple of hours, I know because I am a programmer! Either freelancers are different to the 'big boys' or they are not, but don't try this trick on. I have a 'Freelance Plus' licence for Studio, do your comments mean that I must simultaneously install 2015 on my laptop and my PC? I would prefer to install 2015 on one machine and use 2014 on the other, until I'm happy that I am comfortable with 2015. I fear that it will not be possible. The freelancer has been overrun again by the 'big boys'. What's coming next in terms of licensing? Subscription or cloud versions only? Best regards. Ben

Would you mind taking a look at this problem and tell me if I could trust not to have the same problem in Trados 2015 - meaning - I only find out at the end, after I translated everything, that my text in the target file is all crossed out and in caps and that the font is different as well. What I am asking is is there a warning built in when Trados recognizes something's still wrong with the source file when I try to open it or add it to a new project in SDL even when it looks okay in Word after it has been converted from PDF. http://www.proz.com/forum/sdl_trados_support/196867-source_and_target_segment_crossed_out_in_studio_2009.html#2433500

Ben Senior wrote: If I remember correctly way back in Trados Workbench days, when an upgrade was released it was always possible to carry on using the previous versions, if for some reason it was necessary. You yourself said " Because they used the same core licensing mechanism this automaticaly licensed 2011 again so you were able to run them both." ... but perhaps I wasn't clear. I can't recall how the old Trados worked but I would be very surprised if users were allowed to upgrade and carry on using their old versions in addition to the new ones ad infinitum. So I'll explain the history and facts around Studio licensing. Studio 2009 : This used the old Flexnet licensing which had many problems for single license users (Freelancers) - less problems for multiple license holders (larger organisations) Studio 2011 : This used Nalpeiron licensing which resolved many issues for single license users, but caused quite some problems for multiple license holders Studio 2014 : As Studio 2011 Studio 2015 : This will use SafeNet which has no visible changes for single license users but restores the capability required by multiple license holders That little introduction is important I think because I want to make it clear this is not about pleasing multiple license holders over single license holders. It isn't. It's also important because it helps to see the logic of the upgrade routes and what happens to the licences when you do upgrade... as opposed to purchasing a new license. Studio 2009 upgraded to Studio 2011 The process was you return your 2009 license and can then generate a new license for 2011. In practice if you didn't deactivate Studio 2009 then you could continue to use it and many did. But once they changed computers, or needed to rebuild their own then they would not be able to recover their Studio 2009 license anymore. This is because they turned it in to get Studio 2011 at a reduced upgrade price and they were different licensing models too. Studio 2011 upgraded to Studio 2014 Same process as above but with one difference. The licensing mechanism was exactly the same so when you activated Studio 2014 and still had Studio 2011 installed and deactivated then it reactivated itself. Now, we could have switched this off and probably should have done to ensure consistency but because the change to a ribbon based setup was quite a change we decided to leave it so users could take their time with the upgrade. Studio 2014 upgraded to Studio 2014 Another change in licensing system so when you turn in your Studio 2014 license to generate the new Studio 2015 license you will no longer be able to recover the Studio 2014 version. However, as for the 2009 to 2011 step, if you don't deactivate 2014 on your computer then you can continue to run it alongside 2015 until you have to change computer, or rebuild the one you are using. So existing users can run both applications until they feel comfortable enough to move over to 2015 altogether. If you purchase a new licence as opposed to upgrading then none of the above applies. You have permanent access to your licenses. I hope that made sense, or at least enable everyone to understand how this works and that you don't have to drop the old versions and get thrust into 2015 with no way back. You can continue to run them for as long as you have the old ones on your machine and don't need to reactivate their licenses. So in your scenario where you want to have two licensed copies of the software for the price of one you can do for as long as you have a working computer and activated license for the old version. Just don't return the license for 2014 (so it remains active) on your computer and install 2015 on the other one.
