Hi,

I have a client who sends large documents to be translated and this is done in Studio 2015. But he wants a document to be returned that is basically a bilingual Word file with the two languages side by side. I can export the translated file for external review and easily remove the header row and any superfluous columns.

He wants all of the original formatting (bold, italic, various fonts, etc)

In the bilingual file for review all of the cells are sentences (segments) and all of the formatting is shown as tags, which is not what is needed. Does anybody know how I can achieve this.

I tried the app SDL XLIFF Legit, but it just gives me a message that the conversion failed and nothing more.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ben

Which type of Word file Feb 8, 2016

If I remember correctly (and I might be barking up the wrong tree here), SDL Legit only converts .doc files and not .docx files.

I presume you are doing the conversion prior to translation.

I have the following instructions for my own German to English use:

To convert to a bilingual unclean doc file.

Open SDL legIt! and tick the “convert to bilingual doc” box.

Source German – Target English – convert

Store as a “SDL Trados Translator’s Workbench Document” doc/docx

Hope it helps.

Didn't work Feb 8, 2016

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for the suggestion, but even after producing a new doc source file and translating from the TM I still received the same error in SDL LegIt, "Converting file to a bilingual doc failed. ...".

Hi, Ben!

it is very easy to do with a macro for Word - TransTools ( http://www.translatortools.net/download.html )

After installation you should
1. select the whole text (Ctrl+A)
2. go to menu "Dual-language assistant"
3. convert the text to dual-language table.
4. the result: two columns and paragraph based rows.
5. make text in the 1. column hidden TransTools > Hide/Unhide text
6. pretranslate in Studio
7. export doc
8. unhide text

I endorse that wholeheartedly Albert. There are functions in there that will assist any translation process. Thanks Stan.

Uh, is it normal for the assistant to hang at the "Processing document...100% complete" mark? It's been there for almost 5 minutes.

EDIT: Never mind, figured out the problem. I was giving it too much to chew. It's more effective to convert the document page by page than try to do the whole thing in one go.
