What is WFP 4's internal file format?

I was working on this article: http://cafetran.wikidot.com/interoperability and was wondering to which category WFP 4 belongs:

CAT tools that use XLIFF as an internal file format for translation projects

or

CAT tools that can export translation projects as XLIFF files

WFP4 is this one (if by "internal file format" you mean "default/only intermediary file format"). When you open any file in WFP4 (including XLIFF files from outside WFP4), it converts that file to TXLF, which is XLIFF.

In your quide, you write:

This is false logic.

Trados 2009+ can handle TXLF not because Trados' own format is XLIFF, but because Trados has a filter for XLIFF. WFP4 can handle SDLXLIFF not because WFP4's own format is XLIFF, but because WFP4 has a filter for XLIFF. If you open an SDLXLIFF or TXLF file in WFP4 or Trados, the tools will convert those file to their own XLIFF formats, during translation.

If you open an SDLXLIFF or TXLF file in CafeTran, would CafeTran would work on that file directly, without converting it to its own variant of XLIFF?

XLIFF is a format for documents. "Projects" typically contain documents, but also other resources such as TM’s, terminology, segmentation rules etc. These cannot be embedded in XLIFF files (XLIFF was not designed for that purpose), which is why "projects" are usually ZIP files (often with another extension).

CafeTran can process SDLXLIFF without any conversion. I haven't tested TXLF yet.
