Leisere Festplatten durch leisere Zugriffsgeräusche: Automatic Acoustic Management heißt die Funktion des ATA-Standards. Damit lassen sich Festplatten jederzeit zwischen höchster Performance und Laufruhe umschalten.

Der Trend geht hin zu leisen Festplatten. Die Laufwerke sollen ihren Dienst unauffällig verrichten und nicht durch ein hohes Laufgeräusch und knackende Zugriffe nerven. Eine geringere Performance wird dabei von vielen gerne in Kauf genommen. Besonders im boomenden Markt der Personal Video Recorder – beispielsweise digitale Satelliten-Receiver mit integrierter Festplatte - stören jegliche Geräusche.

Neben klassischen Lösungsansätzen für geringe Geräusche wie Flüssigkeitslager oder niedrige Drehzahl gibt es Möglichkeit, die Zugriffsgeräusche zu reduzieren. Die Positionierung der Magnetköpfe durch den Aktuator übertönt das Laufgeräusch der Festplatte bei weitem. Je geringer die Zugriffszeit ist, desto lauter ist die Geräuschemission des Aktuator-Motors und des Magnetarmlagers.

Achtung: In manchen Anzeigen sind Picobird-Festplatten mit Flüssigkeitslager nicht mit den Suffixen -F / -T ausgezeichnet, sondern mit FDB.
