Ramesh Madhavan: 01:35 Jul 30, 2004: Not just a conductor. It is a complete mechanism mounted on top of the electrically powered vehicle like Tram or Train. When activated, it reaches up and touches the supply conductor above, to draw power for the vehicle. To disconnect, it folds down. -

The disconnector is a seperate part. It has very powerful springs, which are elctro-magnetically operated, to pull-down the Pantograph very quickly.

Traditionally, Pantograghs rose up in an arc, to make connection with the live conductor above. The Horizontally operated one rises in a straight line parallel to earth. |
