Translation of Friedrich W. Nietzsche's work by Helen Zimmern as published in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche :

He will say, for instance: "I may be mistaken about my value, and on the other hand may nevertheless demand that my value should be acknowledged by others precisely as I rate it:--that, however, is not ***vanity (but ***self-conceit, or, in most cases, that which is called 'humility,' and also 'modesty')."

Erklärung:
Firstly, the term "self-conceit" is an oxymoron and should not be used to contrast against anything. It is an improper term.

Secondly, vanity and conceit are similar but different. They are similar because they both have to do with self-image.

Thirdly, they are different because vanity places an emphasis on appearance that conceit does not. One can be conceited without being vain; simply one places more value on oneself than do others.

Will Matter: Yup, but as has been shown (and discussed) here, time and time and time and time again, Googling and the sheer preponderance of numbers means little. Overreliance on Googling (and plain numbers alone) is a severe, capital mistake of the very worst order.

First, let me say that if you want to understand Nietzsche at that level of detail, you should be looking at the German.

As for "self-conceit", it is a bit of a pleonasm to modern ears, but I would point out that one of the older senses of conceit is a whimsical notion. So a whimsical notion of oneself could make sense.

If you want to make a distinction between "Vanity"/"Eitelkeit" and "self-conceit"/"Dünkel", I think vanity is purely an attitude, whereas "self-conceit" is also a mistaken belief about oneself. (I don't claim any credit for this, as it overlaps with the distinctions made by previous answerers.)

One point I should make. Nietzsche was crazy and wrote a lot of nonsense. Translators who translate Nietzsche are no more able to make sense of it than the rest of us. So really, it is not worth trying to chase down distinctions like this.

R. A. Stegemann: Nietzsche was no crazier than the time in which he lived, and there are not a few people today whose philosophical outlook is not aptly described by Neitzsche's writing. Nihilism is alive and well in the 21st century.
