Science - Psychologie / guidelines for genetic testing
Englisch Begriff oder Satz: deep resonances / profound ramifications
I'm stuck picking between these options. Do you feel there is a difference in meaning between the two ?

IMO *resonances* are connections/associations between two elements, but I'm not sure and my dictionaries aren't exactly helping me, given the context

The ST is in Italian, my translation into English goes like this:

"Because of their **profound ramifications/deep resonances**, these decisions cannot be entrusted to test providers but should be made independently by clients. Indeed, non-directive counseling is essential to ensure that individuals or couples can adjust constructively to the outcome of those decisions."

Thank you for your help

Linda 969: 10:25 Sep 16, 2005: forgot to say - the *decision* is whether to undergo genetic testing or not
Linda 969: 10:34 Sep 16, 2005: This is the ST - Si tratta di scelte che, per le loro **risonanze profonde**, non possono essere delegate ad alcuna figura professionale e richiedono la piena autonomia decisionale, come condizione essenziale perché l’esito di tali scelte – quale che sia - venga integrato in modo non distruttivo nel mondo psicologico ed etico dell’individuo o della coppia.

Linda 969: 11:02 Sep 17, 2005: thanks people! - I'm going with *reverberations*, it's the one I hadn't thought of and it sounds good

Erklärung:
I'd go with "profound ramifications" if you're referring to the 'effects/results' that such decisions have. Resonances and ramifications are not the same thing. Resonance implies something much more subtle, while ramification is a direct effect or result produced in a given situation.

profound ramifications

Erklärung:
If you're just providing two options to choose from, then I'd say profound ramifications fits better here.
I guess if we knew the Italian source text, there might be even more fitting suggestions out there.

I see what you mean Linda. But I wouldn't translate the Italian risonanze as resonances here, the meaning doesn't transfer from the Italian. I think your ramifications fits better. I'd agree with JS's definition above.
