He pretty clearly prefers order, quiet, and the decencies of social life to rebellion, intense competition, uncertainties, cruelties, and violence. But he is no preacher. He is observing and checking the records of a dramatic struggle among certain human beings, and preserving it so that those who follow him may be wiser in human ways.
