Chute prématurée des organes fructifères du cotonnier ou abscission. Il peut s'agir de "squares" ou de jeunes capsules, mais jamais de fleurs. Le "shedding" est une réaction physiologique à une altération quelconque affectant la vie du cotonnier. Après le shedding et à condition que le trouble responsable n'ait pas été trop important, la végétation repart avec vigueur et compense partiellement ou totalement la disparition des organes fructifères.
