ABC (Assess By Computer, formerly know as ABW or Assess By Wire) is a set of software tools for setting, taking, and marking exams online. From a student’s point of view an exam is taken using a simple user interface which is provided either as a Java applet used via a web browser, or as a stand-alone application. We refer to this as the client. For exams taken in the department, a special Linux environment provides a high level of technical security. Obviously we make sure that students have ample opportunity to practice using the software with mock exams etc. before it matters.
An ABC exam is structured must like a conventional paper exam, with main questions, sub questions etc. organised into logical sections. Multiple choice questions (MCQs) may be included, although most questions are answered by simply typing text into boxes. Other answer types, in particular diagrams, are being added.
