Je suppose qu'il s'agit d'une lettre d'embauche définitive qui peut être dénoncée par l'une ou l'autre des parties sur préavis d'un mois (sinon je ne vois pas à quoi sert le préavis). Sous toutes réserves... c'est un peu étrange... comme si on mettait les boeufs après la charrue (soit dit en passant, l'apostrophe s est une faute)

Note to Marc (not enough space in the response field). "on either side" I rendered by "par l'une ou l'autre des parties" (employer/employee). As I said, I agree with your explanation in the sense that it seems more logical than what is (poorly) written in English. But the fact that the letter accompanies the contract made me think of those "proposal letters" or "engagement letters" that briefly state the main terms of the work contract without being the contract itself. Of course I may be absolutely wrong and I think the poor drafting should be brought to the attention of the client. |

Please accept my humble apologies, Gabrielle for « par l'une ou l'autre des parties ». Can’t think why I didn’t notice that part of your reply.
On a complete side-track, I would never go with “a one-month written notice”.
“un préavis” may be translated as either
“notice” (no article, but preceeded by a length of time) or “a period of notice”.
I know that web references are a very unstable currency (in fact, I am the first to point out their shortcomings). But I believe this URL from the site of Queen’s University Belfast gets it right.
