I know it's not brass-monkey weather right now, but it's still bloody cold to be sleeping out in the open.

Richard Nice: 9:19am Dec 14, 2004: Very litle support for the 'accepted' answer"! -
Dr Sue Levy: 9:25am Dec 14, 2004: Unistrans, I think the answer was accepted before anyone had a chance to object! -
cmwilliams: 9:45am Dec 14, 2004: I think the answer had just been accepted when I posted my answer. I don't care about the points but it would be good if the glossary entry could be amended. -
DocteurPC (asker): 2:42pm Dec 14, 2004: sorry, sorry - Obviously, I accepted the wrong answer and did it too fast to give anybody else a chance to comment or find the right answer. I like to have fast feedback when I provide answers (even though 24 hours is the recommended time frame suggested) so I do the same. Furthermore, NancyLynn often offers good answers so I let this bias my opinion) I promise, next time, not to ask/grade so fast and will correct the glossary entry.
NancyLynn: 4:13pm Dec 14, 2004: Thanks for your vote of confidence, DocteurPC, but I erred in this case. I`ve ungraded my answer and erased it, so that you can now select and grade the correct one. Nancy -

Zustimmung writeaway: well, everywhere I looked, it meant very cold weather, nothing was mentioned about wet (ça caille....etc.). Maybe it means something else in Canada?

  -> thanks

Zustimmung Charlie Bavington: yep,nothing to do with being wet. and the 'old-sea-dog' link gives exactly the explanation for it that I heard. Doesn't make the explanation right, of course!!

Zustimmung Sheila Hardie: I've never heard it being use to refer to wet weather either - just cold - see also: http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutwordorigins/...

Zustimmung xxxCMJ_Trans: this is the right answer - the other is NOT

  -> thanks CMJ Trans

Zustimmung Tony M: It has been said that it referred originally to freezing the cannon balls ONTO the brass 'monkey' on which they were stored, but quickly got distorted with other, more landlubberly connotations...

  -> thanks Dusty

Zustimmung Richard Nice: yes, and I agree with Dusty. Why was 'wet' accepted against so many disagreements?
9 Stunden
  -> thanks unistrans

Zustimmung Gabrielle Lyons: cold is right wet is not

Zustimmung NancyLynn: sorry about that people, I now remember the expression`'it`s cold enough to freeze the b***s off a brass monkey ;-)
