Rich blacks are made up of several colors. When printed, these other colors, which are printed underneath the black ink, are printed smaller than the black area. It is this zone that is free of the colors under the black that is the keep away.
Trapping is the deliberate overlapping of one colour to an adjacent colour to reduce the effect of colour plane misregistration, resulting in accurate colour transitions.

QuarkXPress and Adobe Illustrator include trapping tools that are acceptable for simple jobs, but are limited to trapping those images they create. XPress, for instance, offers a reasonable trapping feature that can be automated or used manually, but it will not trap imported illustrations or scanned images, leaving the user to manually build **"chokes" (which reduce the area of a particular color)** and "spreads" (which increase color area) within the illustration or photo-retouching program.
Dedicated trapping solutions, on the other hand, analyze entire PostScript files and automatically build all the necessary traps.
These programs also allow the user to view the trapped file and manually set custom traps, permitting greater flexibility. These dedicated applications also handle process colors, spot colors, and ***"keep-aways" for reversed-out images against a "rich" black.***

A problem arises, however, when copy is reversed out (also called knocked out) of a rich black color. If the press or paper go slightly out of register, one or more of the component colors can “peek” out from behind the black.
To avoid this problem, capable trapping systems create a keep-away trap, where the artwork is reversed out of the black at final size, while any component colors are spread away from the knocked-out black. The resulting knock-out is more tolerant of register error.
Trapping details – [see schema]
If artwork is reversed out of a rich black and the press goes out of register, one or more of the component colors can “peek” out of the reverse (example on left), affecting its appearance. The solution to rich-black trapping is the “keep-away” trap (example on light), where colors other than the topmost color are printed away from the defining color. In this example the cyan is held back from the edge of the black.

La forme qui se trouve à l'avant plan est crevé sur le film de la couleur d'arrière-plan. La défonce met en évidence le problème du recouvrement des couleurs lors qu'il y a problème de registre.
Pour remédier au problème qui se crée inévitablement (de registre), il y a la solution du recouvrement qui peut se faire de deux façons:
Engraissé, crée un filet autour de la forme plus pâle que la couleur de fond. Cette méthode déforme votre objet, il augmente sa taille.
L'aminci, cette option de recouvrement est utilisée lorsque la couleur de fond est la plus pâle, il y a une contraction de la couleur de fond. La couleur la plus pâle déborde dans la plus foncée.
