Englisch Begriff oder Satz: brace around the foremain yard
I have seen lots of differents types of yard but this must be too ancient. am getting lost in all the different names... Help ! Forever grateful for answers...
this is still in that film taking place in the British Navy during Napoléonic wars. Brace is also difficult in verb form.

Laure Rose: 7:54pm Jan 2, 2007: gréement ou vergue ? - I'm confused... J'ai beaucoup vu "vergue" aussi, alors c'est vergue ou gréement ? Heureusement qu'on a un pro en Navy parmi nous...
Je précise qu'il s'agit d'une instruction. C'est le film le pire que j'ai jamais eu à traduire en 3 ans, je crois !
Drmanu49: 8:02pm Jan 2, 2007: Brace may be "brassez" but it is usually followed by in or about, here you have around which in this case for me may mean "parez à".
For me, foremain is mizaine and in this case vergue de mizaine could fit.

So it could also be brassez la vergue de mizai
Drmanu49: 8:04pm Jan 2, 2007: ne but around sounds strange once again.
Badynfo's refs are good though. The problem lies with the preposition.
Drmanu49: 9:33pm Jan 2, 2007: Laure, after Tony's comments concerning the preposition, (of course depending on the settings) I would go for "brasser la vergue de mizaine".
Drmanu49: 9:36pm Jan 2, 2007: Maybe "brasser autour de la vergue de misaine" would be better...
Drmanu49: 10:30pm Jan 2, 2007: ne but around sounds strange once again.
Badynfo's refs are good though. The problem lies with the preposition.

Also, under "M", helpfully confirms "misaine"

Laure, I feel sure that badynfo has got the verb right with "brasser" — you may "brace something about" when you are actually bringing the ship onto another tack, but you can simply "brace it around" when you are hauling into or backing away, but not actually changing tack.

"vergue" seems to me clearly correct for "yard", and I think DrManu has correctly interpreted this as being the "yard of the mainsail on the foremast", i.e. the "misaine" — seems to be some doubt over that spelling, but I personally have only ever encountered it with an "s" (cf. EN faux ami "mizzen")

Neutraler Kommentar Tony M: "around" is OK, it simply means to turn it by bracing; not sure about "mizaine", oughtn't it to be "misaine" ? I think it is definitely "brasser" in the imperative usage.

-> Yes Tony, misaine is much more frequently spelled that way.
