All new boilers and boilers retubed should be \'Boiled Out\' before being put into service. The purpose of this cleaning is to remove and emulsify the oils that are protecting the tubes and boiler shell and then to passivate these surfaces. If this is not accomplished foam and carry over will occur when the boiler is put into service.
Our typical boil out procedure is as follows.
1. As the boiler is being filled with water a BOILER BOIL OUT COMPOUND should be added to the boiler The dilution ratio should be as follows:
New Boilers:
3-4 gallons of Liquid Boiler Boil Out Compound or
6-8 pounds of Granular Boiler Boil Out Compound
for each 100 gallons of boiler water
Retubed Boilers:
1-1/2 to 3 gallons of Liquid Boiler Boil Out Compound or
5-7 pounds of Granular Boiler Boil Out Compound
or each 100 gallons of boiler water
Granular material should be completely dissolved in water before adding to the boiler.
Be sure to follow safety instructions for handling, use protective equipment when handling this product. Refer to the Natural Safety Data Sheet for further information.
2. The boiler should be fired at a low firing rate sufficient to ensure circulation of the solution throughout the boiler.
Normally, the boiler is operated to about one half the normal operating pressure. The firing of the boiler should occur at least once per hour for a minimum of six hours.
3. Once each hour all valves and blowdowns should be opened to remove any settled solids.
4. At the end of the procedure all new boiler should be flooded and a line connected from the top of the boiler to a drain. This procedure is necessary to insure all oils have been removed from the steam section of the boiler. This is commonly referred to as an \'over the top\' boil out. Boilers that have been retubed do not need to be flooded or the \'over the top\' boil out procedure.
5. Now the boiler should be allowed to cool, generally overnight. When the boiler is cool it should be drained. The manhole cover and all hand hole covers should be removed and the boiler flushed beginning at the top and continuing to the bottom.
6. The boiler is now clean. It should be refilled with water immediately and a proper amount of oxygen scavenger and boiler treatment added to continue to protect the tubes.
