Per misurare la fissazione degli occhi, si copre un occhio con una lente smerigliata per vedere come si comporta l'altro occhio, cioè se mantiene la fissazione sul punto prestabilito.
Se l'occhio scoperto non mantiene la fissazione si è in presenza di esotropia o exotropia.
Si utilizza anche come ginnastica correttiva per i bambini.
