We've already obtained translations for "Tap on the patient's initials...." but we really want to say that the user should "Tap in the patient's initials...". (I'd prefer to say, "Enter the patient's initials by tapping on the soft keyboard" but I have been overruled!) |

To "tap in", the standard verb used for entering on handheld devices, is translated in Italian as "toccare" (100% sure for Palm OS, fairly certain for PocketPC).
Italian syntax and morphology, though, allow for less flexibility than in English and the closest translation of your sentence backtranslates as... the sentence that was overruled :-( But a literal translation would not be correct.
(replace "tastiera" with the necessary translation for "soft keyboard")
