In contrast to another Greek term, chronos, kainos is not concerned about before and after in terms of clock time. Kainos refers to a quality of being. Much may remain as before, yet everything has been transformed. Paul did not require radical discontinuity. He always believed that in his new apostolic career he was being faithful to his Jewish heritage. Christians weren’t to utterly abandon their former lives. Instead, their new life in Christ would renew, restore, mend, and reform all existing relationships. Paul did not suggest that the Greco-Roman culture of Corinth was bad as such. He did not expect disciples to shed their traditional skins and become total aliens in their own hometown! No, they were to be formed into the body of Christ where they were, healing their city by accepting all with equal regard. As Paul had learned, the status quo attacks those who bring God’s free offer of true peace and justice. Yet if the Corinthians patiently persisted in loving all their neighbors, God would employ them to reconcile everyone to themselves, one another, and the Creator of all. |
