Government and industry analysts agree that the supply situation for green lentils in 2005/06 is one of the heaviest seen in years. The high quality of the 2005 crop is helping to generate good demand, but still the 2005/06 carryout will reach a record high level.
Heading into 2006/07, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is expecting growers to scale back acres by 7%. But unless there is a severe and widespread weather problem, global carryin stocks will still be sufficient to meet many months’ worth of end user buying requirements. U.S. production could also rise, which would further weigh on North American markets.
Even with the above-mentioned 7% drop in acres in 2006, a 318,000-tonne resulting drop in production (of 25%) from 2005 levels, and continued strong demand for lentils, there could still be a carryout at the end of 2006/07 that is larger than this year’s. AAFC is expecting 2006/07 ending stocks to come in at 610,000, up 3-4% from the 590,000 tonnes expected to be carried out of 2005/06.
All in all, this year’s very poor prices and long-term negative outlook is sending a clear signal to Canadian farmers to plant other crops in 2006. Many are expected to switch to red lentils, for which the demand base is strong and the 2005/06 carryout much lighter. |
