Tech/Engineering - Computer: Hardware / Gizmos & watchamacallits | | Englisch Begriff oder Satz: "Thin client appliance" | I am also posting a similar question in the English-English pair hoping for a definition. Even a definition would help, if a translation is not available.
As far as translaton goes, looks like my best bet would be "sistemas thin client appliance"
I think that an "appliance" is a light server used for internet applications.
But this "thin client appliance" gizmo I am dealing with comes with a monitor and they tout its video capabilities.
Servers do not come wiht monitors, and certainly do not need fancy graphics cards.
I do not know if this "thin client appliance" is a server, a workstation, a "sistema cliente", or what.
I have found several related articles in both English and Spanish.
All articles mention thin client appliances rather casually, without offering a definition, as if they were the most natural thing in the world, and us common IT-challenged mere mortals were supposed to what the hell a "thin client appliance" is.
Does anyone have an idea?

It looks like these thin client appliances are desktop machines which can be interconnected via wireless and eliminate the use of local hard drives, floppies, and CDs. Guess they are called "thin client" precisely because of theyr similarity to light server technology. Hope this helps!

Desde el punto e vista puramente de traducción, escojo esta porque no me gusta lo de "cliente delgado" o cliente ligero". No disputoi que quizá se les llame así entre los iniciados, pero prefiero dejarlo como "estaciones de trabajo "thin client"". En cuanto a las definiciones y explicaciones, my infinito agradecimento a todos.

No es más que un nodo \"client\" que es menos funcional que un \"client\" normal pero claro menos complicado de programar y mantener... porque contiene menos \"software\" o \"firmware\". Por eso no me extraña que tenga un monitor y que le hayan puesto la lógica en forma de hardware/firmware...

Los \"clientes ligeros\" (o \"thin clients\") no tienen que tener mucha lógica interna para procesar la información que reciben de otros \"nodes\" en un sistema de \"client/server\"... son los más parecidos a lo que antes se conocía como \"dumb terminals\"... Ha Ha.

Así lo he visto siempre yo. Una vez en un proyecto cuando pregunté cuál era el término que ellos preferían para este término, me dijeron "cliente sin mucho peso".
Appliance se refiere a dispositivos conectados a la red como impresoras, terminales Java y cliente que se gestionan aplicaciones utilizando JMAPI (java management API).
A thin client is a low-cost, centrally-managed computer devoid of CD-ROM players, diskette drives, and expansion slots. The term derives from the fact that small computers in networks tend to be clients and not servers. Since the idea is to limit the capabilities of these computers to only essential applications, they tend to be purchased and remain "thin" in terms of the client applications they include.
The term "thin client" seems to be used as a synonym for both the NetPC and the network computer (NC), which are somewhat different concepts. The Net PC is based on Intel microprocessors and Windows software (Intel was a leader in defining the Net PC specification). The network computer (NC) is a concept backed by Oracle and Sun Microsystems that may or may not use Intel microprocessors and uses a Java-based operating system.
According to ThinPlanet.com, a Web site dedicated to thin client technology, the term "server-based computing" is being used as a synonym for "thin client" because most thin clients today are powered by back-end centralized servers that are capable of serving either fat or thin clients.

Los clientes delgados proveen una manera simple de utilizar estaciones de trabajo de bajo costo tanto como terminales gráficas o bien como terminales de caracteres sobre un servidor GNU/Linux.
Con los clientes delgados, la ventaja principal que se obtiene es que se pueden configurar las estaciones de trabajo para iniciar con un diskette o tarjeta de red y conectarse via red al servidor y ejecutar las aplicaciones nativamente en el servidor y de esta manera dejar intacta la instalación de cualquier otro sistema operativo existente en la estacion de trabajo (en caso de que exista), dado que al apagarla, remover el diskette e inicarla ninguna modificacion habra sufrido el sistema operativo instalado en el disco duro.
La terminal puede también estar falta de disco duro y solamente proveer al usuario de teclado, mouse y monitor, reduciendo el costo de la terminal.
Un equipo excelente para funcionar como cliente delgado es una computadora Pentium I con 16 megas de RAM, tarjeta de video de 1 mega, tarjeta de red, teclado, monitor y mouse. El costo aproximado de un equipo de estas carácteristicas es de $2,000.00 pesos y con este mismo equipo, hará uso de todo el poder del servidor de clientes delgados.
Los requerimientos de hardware para servidor de clientes delgados son los siguientes:
- 1 computadora procesador Pentium 4 mayor de 2 o Athlon equivalente
- 1.5 Gigas de Memoria RAM
- 1 Disco duro de 80 Gigas
- 2 tarjetas de red 10/100 mbps
