"I would rather argue that the verses were original to the text, but subsequently garbled by a scribe."
CONTEXT> author is an archaeologist (quite conservative) commenting on the textual transmission of the Pentateuch, more specifically on how numbers might have been "mangled".

so far my best shot, albeit somewhat loose, is "dañado/s en transmisión"
Other options: mutilado (too vicious), estropeado (too clumsy), mal copiado (says nothing),

Jim Breneman: 3:54pm Jul 29, 2006: Scribes, copistas and their errors - Thanks to everyone for their helpful suggestions and discussion.
I think copista is the right word (vs. escriba, per DRAE) An escribano would be historically accurate for some of their roles but not in this case.
Errors in Textual Criticism(TC) tend to be viewed as unintentional until proven otherwise. There are other terms for "intentional" distortions. In this case, a "deliberate error" is a bit counter to the author's argument.
Perhaps one could argue that "garble" refers here to a consequence, rather than an action, of scribal transmission. On that basis I hesitate to render it as something intentional.

Scribble y scrawl son otros verbos en ingl. que dan la idea de tergiversar o alterar por descuido el texto que es transpuesto

Anoche al cerrar mi computadora me vinieron a la mente dos términos en referencia a este posting: trastocados y desvirtuados, precisamente coincidiendo con tu percepción de que más que de una acción, se trata de una consecuencia, de ahí que quizás convendría ampliar en la versión castellana lo que en inglés resulta tan abreviado en un término tan explicíto como "garbled"... mi humilde opinión y aporte.
