Übersetzungen Englisch > Türkisch [PRO] Linguistik | | Englisch Begriff oder Satz: Simultaneous interpretation/interpreter | | In the same context, does anybody have a good Turkish equivalent for "consecutive interpreter" and/or "escort interpreter"? (For that matter, is there any distinction made between "interpreter" and "translator" in Turkish? "Tercuman," and "cevirmen," even "tercumeci" all seem to signify both, even in learned writing!) I'd like the comments of the native speakers. |

| | Eşzamanlı/Eşanlı (simultane) tercüme/ (...) tercüman | Erklärung: I'm giving the first link below to confirm that there is indeed a "kavram kargaşası (or even "kavram kargalaşması").
There's enough of a consensus on the following, though:
Simultaneous interpretation/interpreter
Eşzamanlı/Eşanlı tercüme/ (...)tercüman
Consecutive interpretation
Ardıl tercüme
(though many vendors also include the Turklish terms Simultane tercüman and Konsekütif tercüman)
I personally stick with tercüman for interpreter and çevirmen for translator. (The first link calls interpretation "sözlü çeviri" -- then is an interpreter a "sözlü çevirmen"? Perhaps he or she is engaged/sözlenmiş...)
The closest definition I've seen for escort interpreting is "refakatçi hizmetleri" provided by translation agencies. It seems to involve guide/concierge services in addition to interpreting. I see "Konferans çeviri/tercüme hizmetleri" etc. all the time, but I'm not sure what the correct term is, particularly when it comes to finding an equivalent for whispering interpreting. Belki bilen çıkar. Var mı aramızda "fısıldayan dragomanlar"?

Looks like we\'ll have to agree on the English terms first, in terms of nuances and divergence. The following is from http://www.barinas.com/a-c.htm:
Consecutive interpretation: Oral translation of speech into another language, after the speaker speaks. The interpreter takes notes while the speaker talks and then delivers the interpretation while the speaker is silent. No equipment is used [my note: recently there was some discussion on the Web about a teleprompter-type device, which could be a prototype or even apocryphal, that displays text recorded by an official court notetaker on the consecutive interpreter\'s monitor, thus enabling the CI to concentrate on the discussion without having to take notes]. Often used in business meetings, negotiations, and press conferences.
Simultaneous interpretation: The oral translation of spoken language into another language, at the same time and at the same rate of speech as the speaker.
Escort interpreter: An interpreter who travels with an individual or small delegation during technical, state visits, trade shows, etc., usually performing whispering interpreting or wireless interpreting.
Whispering interpreting: Simultaneous interpreting without the use of interpretation equipment, where the interpreter sits close to the listener and whispers the interpretation. Whispering is not recommended when there are more than two listeners or more than two interpreters working at the same time in the same room. Whispering requires a team of two interpreters and, since it is extremely taxing and hard on the vocal chords, it is only appropriate for very brief one-on-one meetings.
