Yes, Jane, I\'ve quite often come across \'édition\' used like this too — always feels a bit odd, but there you go... I suppose it\'s another of those words like \'déclinaison\' that gets extrapolated quite a long way...

The expression is purely an image borrowed from the accounting sector. It does however hint at a financial element. It could well mean that there were less (paying) visitors to the Fair. As to whether less orders were placed, that too may be true.

I think I may be putting my comments in the wrong place but all I am trying to say is that the idea is very simple and is based on \"faire le bilan\" (to take stock). The organisers have simply taken stock of results (probably the number of entry tickets sold) and have drawn the conclusion that the 45th edition of the Fair was less of a success than earlier such events.
I confirm that \"édition\" is really very very common in French with this type of meaning. You could refer to the \"21ème édition de la Fête de la Musique\" which took place in France last weekend, for example

-> no wish to start a running battle but "bilan" here is simply part of the expression "faire le bilan" i.e. take stock of results - it is just an imaginative and very French way of saying something that is really very simple
