It is to do with nitrate-trapping crops used with a view to reducing levels of agricultural pollution ending up in water. What I need to understand here is exactly what is being 'adjusted' - the 'apports azotés' - nitrogen intake?

With the help of the Ontario Research Enhancement Program (OREP), an AAFC funding program that encourages partnerships between university, industry and government researchers, they’re setting their sights on the greatest single cost facing today’s corn producers: ***nitrogen supplementation of soil***.
Climatic conditions can profoundly affect the amount of nitrogen naturally produced in soil and the amount a corn plant needs. By accurately defining these changes, the researchers hope to give farmers an accurate estimate of how much nitrogen fertilizer they need to maximize their output and minimize the negative effects of excess fertilizer on the environment.
