Casuarina equisetifolia
L., Casuarinaceae
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Synonyms: C. litorea L. var. litorea, C. littorea Rumph.

Common names:

English: casuarina, ironwood, Australian pine, she-oak, horsetail tree, beefwood

French: arbe de fer, bois de fer, filao, pin d'Australie

Spanish: arbol de hierro

Other:  toa (American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Hawai‘i, Niue, Samoa and Tonga); weeku (Chuuk); nokonoko, nokonoko ndamu, nggaro, thau, velau, nakure, qaro (Fiji); ‘aito (French Polynesia); gagu, gago (Guam, CNMI); weighu (CNMI-Carolinian); pientri (pinetree), nidil, bû ukam (bluegum on some atolls), nidõ (needle" on some atolls) mejinoki (Marshall Islands); lach (Ulithi); laash (Woleai); nach (Yap); te katurina (from Ecoport, source not given)

Description: "Trees 10-20 m tall; branches long, slender, the tips drooping, pubescent. Leaf sheaths with (6)7(-9) teeth. Staminate spikes densely flowered, 1-6 cm long, bracts densely pubescent. Cones subglobose to elongate and oblong-globose, 1.2-2.2 cm long, ca. 1.1-1.4 cm in diameter, the valves broadly ovate, protruding ca. 2 mm, pubescent, apex obtuse. Nuts 6-7 mm long (incl. wing)." (Wagner et al., 1999)

Habitat/ecology: A pioneer, salt-resistant tree. Very hardy on both limestone and volcanic soils. Where invasive, forms monotypic stands under which little else grows. In Hawai'i it is common in all but the driest and wettest coastal areas of all islands up to 500 m. In Fiji, occurs between sea level and about 475 m in dry seaside areas such as sandy beaches, rocky coasts, and coastal forest, and inland on grass- and reed-covered hills and in open forest. Fire-resistant.

Propagation: Seeds, wind- and water-dispersed.

Native range: Australia and into Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia; widely cultivated and naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions. Probably an ancient introduction to Polynesia (Whistler, 1992).

So, \"a strip of casuarinas/Australian pines\" = une bande de filaos

-> I imagine the text is talking about a management plan for a strip of Australian pine trees - that's how I read it anyway - does that seem a wee bit clearer? I hope so:-)

I did not read SJH\'s answer with adequate care and got stuck on the first line which did not mention the \"bande\", I confess i got a bit drowned in the references and missed out the \"strip\" part of the naswer which is obviously fine.
Due apologies to SJH and please asker consider my commnts here were unfair and irreleveant
