L’anthropologue ne doit pas essayer de
s’échapper mais au contraire assumer son statut de

Alanna Wilson-Duff: 3:37pm Jul 19, 2007: This is to express the idea that research methodology must move forward from the previous experience of the anthropologist looking at his subject and his subject looking back at him, to a reciprocal outlook with both parties looking at the world in the same direction.
Now I just need to figure out how to say all that neatly!
vera-tech: 7:32pm Jul 19, 2007: There are a lot of texts on the Internet talking about this - I added a note with a few examples - I think they are overall better than the suggestions
vera-tech: 8:31pm Jul 19, 2007: (my note refers to both of your questions btw)

go from being an outsider looking in to an insider engaging in reciprocal observation

a few good phrases:

Merleau-Ponty fights the Cartesian model of vision where individuals see the world from an external vantage point, or "God's eye" view and stresses that we as human beings are not dis-embodied eyes looking down upon the world. We are embodied. Therefore, in order to see, we must be in our bodies, in the world. If we are embodied in a shared world, we can be also be seen by those we see.

******
Merleau-Ponty identifies the fundamental "reversibility" in vision: the observer is both subject and object, the seeing and the seen.

Merleau-Ponty's contribution was to tighten the concept of dasein through an .... We are both observer and what is observed at the same time. ...

Merleau-Ponty writes of the implication of the seer in the visible, and of the shared participation of the subject and the object in a visibility of everything.

to move from complementary to shared observations

Erklärung:
This is what I would understand - 'regards croisés' being two different angles of observation converging on sth, and 'regards partagés'... well, shared, coming from the same angle...
just a thought

In the light of your note, Alanna, how about sth like -
"to move from each observing the other to both observing (the world) together...."
... this of course in the hope that each/other/both will be clearly identifiable by the reader...

something along these lines perhaps

my understanding is that 'regards croisés' is the way the observer and the observed see each other but it's a one-way situation with the observer simply collecting information and data. The 'regards partagés' means that they have moved on to a situation of shared, in-depth understanding which means the observer also becomes the observed to a certain extent.
