Yes, Andeds, exactly! \"appliqué\" may also be used as at this nicely illustrated site:
http://www.metmuseum.org/explore/First_Cities/death_caucasus...
Appliqués of lions, bulls, and rings, late 4th–early 3rd millennium B.C. North Caucasus, Maikop kurgan. Gold and cinnabar; a. Large lions: L. 6 cm (2 3/8 in.), b. Small lions: L. 4.8 cm (1 7/8 in.), c. Bulls: L. 3.1 cm (1 1/4 in.), d. Rings: Diam. 3.4 cm (1 3/8 in.). The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia 34-30, 34-31, 34-32, 34-33.
Gold appliqués in the form of lions and bulls, as well as rings, rosettes, and diadems, were found, along with gold, silver, carnelian, and turquoise beads in the Maikop kurgan. All the animal-shaped appliqués were stamped and pierced along the edges for attachment to fabric. Thirty-seven are in the form of striding lions, facing either left or right. Some are well executed, and others are more poorly made. Other appliqués, also of poorer quality, are in the form of bulls facing right. Forty stamped gold appliqués are in the form of rings, with openings made along the edges. All the appliqués were found with the remains of the main human burial and may have been attached to the deceased\'s clothing or to the fabric of a canopy hanging above the body.

Appliqué is defined in Adeline\'s Art Dictionary as \"A general term for ornaments which are let into or fixed on to the surface of an object. For instance, a wood panel may be decorated by appliqués of bronze. The name is particularly given to candelabra, the horizontal shank of which is terminated by an ornament, fixed on a vertical surface, such as panelling, wainscoting, or pilasters.\" Context will reveal all!

Widerspruch Richard Benham: "Light fixture" suggests something modern. We're talking archaeology here. Also it is specifically a light which goes on a wall.

Zustimmung Richard Benham: I assume there is no acute on the last letter. It means a wall lamp, pure & simple. A scone is something you eat.

Zustimmung Dylan Edwards: Yes, applied ornamentation of some kind (perhaps originally sewn onto clothing, or inlaid). Examples can be found by doing Google searches for "appliques d'or" and "appliques d'argent".

I would say that they are decorative items set on a wall, I would tend to go to murals which is as general a term as "applique"

Kommentare zu dieser Antwort (und Antworten vom Beantworter der Frage)
Widerspruch Richard Benham: A mural or fresco is a painting. These are gold or silver objects and the word "applique" means a wall lamp.
