I've also got "science consacrée" in relation to archaeology: "l'émergence de l'archaeologie en tant que...", which I believe means "science in its own right" or "as a separate science"... |

In France, whenever a construction project covering a certain minimum area is to go ahead, the zone must first yield up any archaeological interest. This involves archaeologists excavating trenches covering 10% (?) of the total surface area, to a depth of 50 cm. As someone pointed out at a local council meeting, it's really pretty pointless - but compulsory nonetheless - when you know that the ground concerned has been built up 80cm with imported fill in the last 50 years!

What really annoys builders is that there is no requirement for the archaeologists to backfill their trenches once they have finished!

I guess \"rescue digs\" is another side of the same coin, in circumstances where one is not required to carry out an archaeological survey beforehand, or where the survey fails to detect items of interest.

MSG conducted phase III archeological mitigation excavation at two prehistoric sites, 33WY674 to and 33WY783, in Antrim Township, Wyandot County, Ohio. These studies were completed for the Ohio Department of Transportation as part of the U.S. Route 30 relocation project. Phase I and II investigations of the sites concluded both sides were eligible for the national register of historic places, and as a result, phase III data recovery excavations were undertaken by MSG to mitigate the effects of the proposed highway.

I THINK \"fouilles de sauvetage\" refers to saving what MIGHT be there but which is not known about, i.e. preventing putting things of interest under tons of concrete without even realizing it, rather than (solely) saving what is known to be there beforehand.
