It's more to know whether the metal is "attacked" or "corroded". I do not think that "etching" is relevant here.
Any help gratefully appreciated!

Ajoutez 10 ml d'acide nitrique R et achevez l'attaque du métal au bain-marie bouillant jusqu'à disparition totale des vapeurs nitreuses.
Add 10 ml of nitric acid R and achieve the corrosion of the metal in a boiling water bath until the nitrous vapours have completely disappeared

My reason for thinking this is purely because we would naturally say "nitric acid attacks metal"
I always think of 'corrosion' as being somehow more long-term...

This is indeed a lab experiment, so I have chosen this answer.

Erklärung: In my humble opinion I would go for "corrosion". I think the metal is being put in the hot water bath to stop the corrosion. "Achever" means to stop/end, not acheive. Hope this helps.

Erklärung: Cleaning of metals in acid solutions is known as pickling.
-------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2007-09-06 14:00:58 GMT) --------------------------------------------------
PICKLING — This effect is produced when metals are immersed in acid solutions which attack them. The process of pickling refers to the removal of heat scale, discoloration and rust from steel by acids, mainly (10% plus or minus a few percent) at temperatures anywhere from 120°F to 180° F./49°C to 83°C. Muriatic acid is used extensively on lesser scaled steels and rusted parts. This acid is used at room temperature at about 20% to 40%. Heat is not used with this acid because of the fuming nature of this acid especially at elevated temperatures. Inhibitors are often recommended to prevent attack on the base metal and to reduce consumption of the acid. Care must be used in adding inhibitors as too much can slow down considerably the descaling or derusting operation
