Basically, a thermal break involves the use of inserts (such as plastic) to insulate against cold bridges in aluminium frames (windows, doors, etc). Aluminium is notorious for this (cold bridges = condensation), since it's a good conductor. This design therefore reduces condensation and heat loss.
