Thanks for the clarification Nancy; I still think this is a calque for "fun-tan" - sun worshipers tend to flock to tanning salons when there is no sun ;-)

But come to think of it, isn't 'tanning' itself 'bronzage plaisir' - as opposed to the bronzage you get when you're hunting, fishing, sailing, working the fields, etc.?

Why couldn't you say "tanning for pleasure"? I'm not getting ghits for it. But, that's exactly what they're saying here.

smoking for pleasure
eating for pleasure

By the way, I think that "recreational tanning" seems to imply more tanning in tanning beds. I could be wrong, though
