I think that the "a hauteur de" is somewhat surplus in English.

Zustimmung juliebarba: agree. Has acquired/bought 3.240 shares in our company. I find this version correct, simple + good English. Bought a shareholding too; which takes out both participation & capital

bought 3 420 shares

Erklärung:
pretty well all of the answers are fine, but I would put it even more simply:
At the beginning of 2003, XXXXXXXXX bought 3 420 shares in our company.

sometimes you have to forget about the grammar rules as we learnt them or taught them to intermediate level French speakers in the past. In the real world the French use depuis with the passé composé to describe an action which happened in the past (but which created a state which still exists). If you have access to the records of the company in question would you be kind enough to check whether the shares were all bought (or acquired, sorry "legend" Dusty) as one block early in 2003, or gradually since that time.

Neutraler Kommentar Tony M: Except: maybe they didn't BUY them as such...?

-> They probably did, but I take your point Dusty and suggest acquired

Neutraler Kommentar Richard Quinn: with "depuis" you need the present perfect not the simple past (since 2003, X has acquired...)

has acquired an equity interest

Erklärung:
of/amounting to XXXX units (I'd avoid "shares", on the assumption that they'd have said 'actions' in that case).
