Tony M: 3:18pm Apr 18, 2006: Unless the bait if needed for xhaling, I should think at 200 l this would be quite a big tank suitable for keeping your catch alive in. -
Tony M: 3:19pm Apr 18, 2006: Sorry, 'is needed for whaling'

On a boat, they call it a fish-well, but I don't know how you'd describe it for a gîte; maybe a fish-tank or a fish holding tank??? -
David Goward: 4:23pm Apr 18, 2006: Chappy, is there any clue as to the type of angling offered in the area? Where is the gîte located? -
Chappy: 6:20pm Apr 18, 2006: David. Thanks for you help and question. It's close to a lake. Pike and carp seem to be the main types of fish caught.

live bait tank

Yes, it's where live bait is kept to keep it.... errr.... alive!

As Tony points out, 200 L does seem quite large for such a tank, unless the gite is designed to accommodate several anglers. However, I can't see why you would keep your catch alive... if you didn't want to kill the fish, you'd chuck 'em back!

"Pêche au vif" using live bait is a common pike-fishing technique in France. Given the extra info provided by Chappy above, I'm fairly sure that the gîte would offer a live bait tank for anglers on a fishing holiday.

Re. the size: 200 litres would be just under 4x the size of my son's aquarium so it's not excessively big really.

Went for David's answer in the end. Many thanks. My question was not as "idiotic" as I'd feared.

I don't know much about fishing but looking at this forum, it seems to me that you can keep both bait and fish that you want to keep alive for the moment in the tank. Looking at the forum, they are talking some pretty big fish!!!!

Neutraler Kommentar David Goward: The fish they are wanting to keep alive are to be used as bait, prob. for pike fishing. One guy keeps larger fish in his tank (could even be a pond) at home so that they flap about a lot and oxygenize the water.

As Tony has said, it's not necessarily for bait: there are many places - in Quebec we call them 'pourvoiries' - where the fish are caught and released.

Neutraler Kommentar David Goward: The context is a gîte offering a service to predominantly French anglers. Taking the fish back to the gîte to release them later is an unlikely scenario, I feel.

Neutraler Kommentar Tony M: No, actually, people DO catch and keep fish alive sometimes, for a number of reasons; but of course, it might be small fish used for catching bigger fish, or e.g. "crévisses' --- when you fish for them, you start off by catching something else first...

-> "small fish used for catching bigger fish"... yep, that's "live bait"!

Zustimmung xxxdf49f: absolutely - un "vif" en français is a live fish you keep alive until ready to use it to bait and catch the big one
