Übersetzungen Französisch > Englisch [PRO] Forstwirtschaft/Holz/Nutzholz | | Französisch Begriff oder Satz: espèces de coupes forestières ou lisières. | An environmental study on the impact on the local area of installing underground electric cables. The whole paragraph is as follows:
Pour la végétation forestière, le rajeunissement est radical et l’on retourne au stade initial de la succession végétale. Les stades pionniers initiaux évoluent en 1,5 an vers des formations herbacées plus fermées dans lesquelles de jeunes ligneux apparaissent, prémices des stades ultérieurs (fourrés, parfois landes puis boisements). L’effet lisière se fait ressentir en bordure des boisements touchés avec l’apparition et/ou le net développement d’espèces de coupes forestières ou lisières.

as I understand it, the text is talking about the regrowth AFTER clearing and cable laying works (rejeunissement, stades pionniers, effet lisière, etc.) and compares it to the "espèces de coupes forestières ou lisières."

| forest edge plants/species or post cutting species
Erklärung: Forest edge plants/species gets quite a few ghits for the context. More tricky is the 'coupes' bit my suggestion only gets about 3 hits. My reasoning is that if forestry clearance is called 'cutting' then this kind of scrubby plant regeneration is "post cutting" - but it probably needs a bit more research!

Erklärung: My Canadian environmental dictionary has an entry:
coupe de lisière (Canadian term). Syn. de coupe par bandes.
coupe par bandes - strip cutting - = coupe de lisière (CAN) - strip felling
Coupe exécutée dans un peuplement sur des bandes de dimensions variées et servant à favoriser la régénération.
No entry for "coupe forestière" though.
My question: might it be intended to read "espèces de coupes forestières ou (de coupes de) lisières". Especially if your text is Canadian ... In which case "coupe forestière" might be "open felling" or something similar that indicates large "two-dimensional" expanses of felling.

Might "strip species" work? There are certainly "filter strip species" for drainage systems, "wind strip species", and "buffer strip species" along rivers, etc. And then you get "fire-break species"; however this seems to refer to a type of tree that is fire-resistant rather than the type of vegetation that grows in fire breaks.
Or something like "strip-cut species"?

After all that ! ;-) Well, if the Canadian sense can be excluded (what about the influence of all those Canadian foresters who came to France after the big storm in 1999???), maybe "clear-cut and forest-edge species".

Clearcut: A silvicultural method which removes all trees from a designated area at one time for the purpose of creating a new, even-aged stand. This management system is usually used to regenerate shade-intolerant tree species. Variations include patch and strip clearcutting.

Oh dear! Looks as if I've been barking up the wrong tree ;-). It doesn't look as if "coupe forestière" is a particular type of operation, just forest felling generally (although it often appears to be used synonymously with "CPRS" (coupe avec protection de la regénération et des sols).
