I don't quite understand the meaning of 'conférer' in this sentence. Could it be that the person who was doing the transcript misunderstood the word said?

| | Notiz(en) an den/des Fragesteller(s)sodamnlogical: 9:24pm Oct 9, 2005: for the record: I know what conférer means, and I also knew that conférent was a typo for conférant. What seemed weird to me was it being used in this context; it seemed to me that the subject of this verb was usually a person, not a 'thing' - which was DEAD wrong, I realize that now. We learn our lessons everyday! :-)
