Französisch Begriff oder Satz: "epouse"
Can anyone give an official equivalent in English for "epouse" in French administrative documents, when phrased for e.g. Marie Dupont epouse Durand?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Rachel Los (asker): 4:36pm Apr 13, 2004: epouse - Thanks everyone, I'll definitely go for "M. Durand nee Dupont".
Patrick McKeown: 8:31pm Apr 13, 2004: Thanks very much, Tsvetok! -

spouse
Erklärung:
I'm not squatting, folks, I just wanted to point out that in the UK at least we often see it the other way round, Marie Durand nee Dupont, using the French word (with appropriate accent)to show the after and before.

I should make it clear that my suggestion for this particular post is, as Tom Bishop words it, \"née with the surnames reversed\"; spouse, as Carol Williams points out, is the straighforward translation, but not the appropriate response to Tsvetok\'s question. (Whew!)

-> thanks Tom; I was about to agree with you, but that would probably look a bit suspicious now!! I think my own version stands for something reported in a newspaper or semi-official document , while your suggestion is definitely right for forms .

Zustimmung cmwilliams: yes, Marie Durand née Dupont is how it is written in English. Durand is her married name. We don't use 'spouse' in this context.

just some more info....

Erklärung:
would personally tend to agree with the "née" solution for most contexts, but it rang a bell, so I looked up a personal glossary, and found:

Agnes A épouse B = means Agnès B née A, but preferred solution is Agnès A (Mrs.B)

"Preferred solution"? No idea, but a lot of these mystery entries are culled from FLEFO. I have an inkling this may have been for a list of names for a conference or something, so may not be entirely relevant, but I thought I'd share it with you!

(also kind of supports Dusty's comment to JK's suggestion)
