ormiston: 7:25am Jul 3, 2008: this is great feedback and yes it's a marketer talking (it does appear between quotation marks). Apparently the singer Renaud coined the phrase about his own brother in law & it is oftenused here to describe the (screen) characters of chaps like Gérard Jugneot (who has moved on!). So : faintly derogatory, male & unspohisticated but not necessarily into binge drinking or misbehaviour. By weeding out, that almost leaves Juan's more neutral 'unsophisticated' unless you can confirm the more colourful 'slob' or 'lout'. Qui dit mieux ? And thank you all !

Matthew McVeagh: 8:30am Jul 3, 2008: "Pikey" has been used as a derogatory term for gypsies, and more recently for chavs in south-eastern England. It has nothing specially to do with beer or the string-vest, 'unsophisticated', Joe Six-Pack type.
juliebarba: 8:49am Jul 3, 2008: You can't use pikey. So we can rule that one out ;-). I don't think chav is any more derogatory than beauf, but it could only be used for the UK....I don't think there's a suggestion of being a lout though..

Matthew McVeagh: 9:55am Jul 3, 2008: Your "slob" is actually quite good Emma, close to the 'coarse' sense of "beauf". I still like "lager lout" because it's beer-specific: what we need is a phrase like "lager slob" but that is not a real English set phrase. :(

Although quite neutral, and not a direct translation (of beauf or désamorcer), I think captures much of the sense.

... to move/get away from beer's unsophisticated image
Otherwise you could go down the chav / "common" / redneck route but I think this is (even) more colloquial sounding than beauf

FWIW at this late stage, I also wondered about the word 'bloke'. Whereas chav / slob / lout etc are too strong, I recognise that bloke is clearly too weak. However, depending on the rest of the text something like "the blokeish image of beer" or even "the stereotypical bloke image of beer" might be an alternative. |

"Beauf" is an adjective usually refers to a very ordinary and stereotypical Frenchman.
"Beer" here is being seen as being "mundane/conservative/perhaps "boring". Such is the image it usually conjures up.
