Übersetzungen Französisch > Englisch [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Materialien/Werkstoffe (Kunststoffe, Keramik usw.) / angle brackets | | Französisch Begriff oder Satz: bois porté | My other half has just asked me a question I cannot answer and the glossaries are silent on this.
In a list of builder's fixtures, mention is made of an angle bracket which, for the horizontal part, is fixed into concrete and for the upright into wood.
The "arm" that is nailed (?) into concrete is the "support" and the other "arm" secured to a wooden part is called the "bois porté". I must confess that that is all I know.
The base has been called a "support" in English also but no-one seems to know what to call the upright. The suggestion so far is apparently "supporting member".
Has anyone any knowledge of this sort of things and/or any ideas?
Thanks |

I received a rather garbled explanation by phone when I was half-asleep.... Tony M: 8:28am Mar 30, 2006: Exactly! These labels are referring to what is attached to each arm of the L bracket, and not giving names to the arms of the bracket itself - xxxCMJ_Trans: 9:19am Mar 30, 2006: Dusty - Sure but what do we call the piece of wood that is being "porté"? Francis MARC: 9:48am Mar 30, 2006: well, just the "supported piece of wood" I guess - Tony M: 10:17am Mar 30, 2006: It would usually be called by what it's function is in the building etc.; if not, you have to stay hazy and perhaps call it 'timber upright' or something vague like that - Kari Foster: 11:59am Mar 30, 2006: I would just call it an 'arm', as you said. If I am picturing it correctly, it's the horizontal part and it is cantilevered, right? I found a thing like this on a website for a dung shelter (!!!!) http://www.mapaq.gouv.qc.ca/Fr/Regions/chaudiereappalach -
