In fact it relates to a flow modifier with such diverse applications as textile-printing pastes, paints, cosmetics, it also acting as an anti-sedimentation agent. Consequently, I favour Francis' definition in the light of the second defininition he cites. If my own assessment of the answers seems faulty to one of you, I would of course be happy to discover why. Many thanks again.
